The Mind Body Connection- Benefits of Exercise

Going for a jog or hitting the gym isn't just about shedding pounds or adding muscle definition. According to Huffington Post, it can reduce stress, boost happy chemicals in the brain, improve self-confidence, prevent cognitive decline, alleviate anxiety, sharpen memory, help control addiction, increase relaxation and tap into creativity,  to name a few.  The American Psychological Association points out that exercise can help alleviate long term depression. Many doctors will prescribe exercise to the clinically depressed, because in some cases, it can be just as effective as antidepressants.

According to wellness publication Greatist, exercise increases concentrations of norepinephrine, which is a chemical that helps to moderate the brain's ability to handle stress. Breaking a sweat is also proven to prevent and relieve anxiety.

As we grow older, our brains become a little less sharp. Exercise and a healthy diet can work to prevent the cognitive decline that begins at age 45. Working out boosts the chemicals in the brain that support and prevent degeneration of the hippocampus. The hippocampus is an essential part of the brain that is responsible for memory and learning.

Dopamine is the chemical in the brain which is released during any form of pleasure such as exercise, sex, drugs, alcohol or food. Some people become addicted to dopamine and depend on things like drugs or alcohol, which produce it. Exercise can help addicts because it can effectively distract them and cause them to de-prioritize cravings.

For women, exercise can help to eliminate PMS and depression that can happen during menses. Working out can also alleviate the pain caused by menstrual cramps.

Exercise can even lead to a higher quality of sex life. Being more comfortable with your body leads to better sex, and people who are more physically fit tend to have higher self esteem. Sexual performance among the more physically fit is often ranked higher. Exercise can also help you have orgasms. Studies show that women who frequently work out are able to reach orgasm faster and more intensely.
