Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Awareness Month: Everything you need to know!
October is National ADHD awareness month!
Millions of Americans are coping with ADHD. A common misconception is that only children and adolescents are diagnosed with ADHD. While some individuals will continue to need medication management others will be able to identify coping skills and behavioral changes that can assist them in managing.
Symptoms of ADHD in children include:
Appearing to not listen when spoken to directly (can also indicate auditory processing)
Moving quickly, talking quickly, “bouncing all over the place”
Often forgetful or easily distractible
Interrupting often
Symptoms of ADHD in Adults include:
Poor time management skills
Can be reckless or impulsive
Disorganized and struggles with prioritizing
Low frustration tolerance
Medications are one means to addressing and managing ADHD in children and adults but there are other options to assist individuals no matter their age. One option is creating structure throughout the day to manage what must be completed. Using timers, making lists andcreating a set schedule can assist in the management of symptoms. Another option is to utilize exercise as a means of increasing concentration and creating a sense of accomplishment. Locally utilizing local gyms or trails such as the D&L trail to engage in physical activity can be a means of improving overall concentration and wellbeing. Meditation can also be helpful.
