Couples counseling also known as marriage therapy, is a type of psychotherapy in which a licensed therapist with clinical experience working with couples, helps people involved in a romantic relationship gain insight into their relationship, resolve conflict, and improve relationship satisfaction utilizing a variety of therapeutic interventions

  • What do you do in couples counseling?

Couples therapy can be slightly different depending on the therapist and couple. However, the following are general principles that all couples therapy will include.

    1. A focus on a specific problem (i.e. sexual difficulties, Internet addiction, intimacy, jealousy)

    2. . Active participation on the part of the therapist in treating the relationship itself, rather than each individual separately.

    3. Solution-focused, change-oriented interventions early on in treatment.

    4. A clear establishment of treatment objectives.

  • Is couples counseling only for married partners?

This is a common question and the answer is no, not at all! Couples therapy can be helpful to almost any couple including:

    1. Straight or gay relationships; Interracial relationships

    2. Young teen or college relationships

    3. Relationships with a large age gap

    4. Relationships that are at any stage, including dating, engaged, or married

  • Should we even try couples counseling if we are getting a divorce?

Yes! This is particularly a good idea when there are children involved. In those cases, you may need to communicate with your ex spouse for the foreseeable future. We can help you with co-parenting as well as improving communication to ease with those difficult transitions.
