Weight Loss & Health Counseling

In the United States an estimated 41.9 % of adults are considered obese and 30% are overweight. While 19% of children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 are obese and 16 percent are considered overweight.

Overweight and obesity increase the risk for many health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, joint problems, liver disease, gallstones, some types of cancer, and sleep and breathing problems, among other conditions.

  • Diet

According to the University of Penn, 65% of dieters return to their pre-diet weight within three years and 5% of people who lose weight on a restrictive diet (such as liquid or no-carb diet) keep the weight off.

People do not fail diets; diets fail people!

Weight loss is not a goal for everyone.

Every person who is overweight does not need to focus on weight loss nor should you feel the pressure to.

If you feel that weight loss would be beneficial for your physical and mental health, it is a personal decision that should be explored with a medical professional.

  • Lifestyle Changes

We help you make small incremental behavioral and lifestyle changes on the path to a more happy and healthy you.

Cognitive behavioral therapy helps people increase awareness of, and eventually challenge and change, the negative cognitions (or thoughts) that often drive the “unhealthy” behaviors. CBT can also help people get to the core of the problem, as the relationship with food is often just the symptom of a deeper issue.

Recently, the scientific and medical communities have begun to sing the praises of CBT for weight loss benefits. Several studies have detailed the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy as a supplement to traditional diet and exercise. The studies have shown that patients using CBT in addition to diet and exercise showed more dramatic and long-lasting changes to their overall body composition than those that used just diet and exercise, or just cognitive behavioral therapy.

Our Approach to Holistic Weight Loss & Health Counseling

Trying to lose weight can be a frustrating and overwhelming process, but you do not have to do it alone. Asking for the support of a trained therapist might be the next step. In addition to the lifestyle changes, working with a therapist can also help increase one’s understanding about their relationship to food, and identify any underlying issues that might contribute to weight gain, overeating, negative body image, etc. Although all therapists are different, CBT for weight loss typically involves one or many of the following approaches or strategies:

  • Goal setting

  • Self-monitoring

  • Feedback and reinforcement

  • Increasing personal motivation and belief in self

  • Incentives
